Heiner Goebbels' Stifter's Dinge is a triumph of imaginative and technical brilliance.

"Amazement was my chief reaction, that someone could actually conceive of such a bizarre image. Also amusement, as the strumming became more and more frenzied. And just a touch of unease. What if the computer controlling this elaborate Heath-Robinson contraption went haywire and the whole thing jumped the tracks? And what was that smoking milky liquid, which reminded me irresistibly of those old scientific films about Earth’s primeval miasma?..."
