Classical review of 2014: is Europe losing its grip?
This year marked a shift in power relations within classical music
"The most striking of all was Delusion of the Fury by that American maverick and enthusiast for Ancient Greek music, Harry Partch. It received its UK premiere, 40 years after it was composed, at the Edinburgh International Festival. In Heiner Goebbels’s inspired production, the traditional Japanese tale of the ghost who is reconciled to his murderer took on a majestic gravity, lit up by Partch’s extraordinary self-invented orchestra. It was a reminder that classical music could be shaken up by something ancient as much as by something new."
